GWR 4-4-2 No 40 - Introduced in 1906 by Churchward this was the locomotive that started the Chuchward style of express locomotives for the GWR. From this machine can be traced the typical GWR style that lasted right through the Stars, Castles, Kings, Manors, Halls, etc. Originally intended to form part of a class of 10 locomotives the rest of the order was turned out as 4-6-0 's and became the Star Class. No 40 was rebuilt as a 4-6-0 in 1909.
