The Barry Railway Company was incorporated in 1884 and also owned several coal mines. The head office was at Barry where the docks were developed and enlarged.  It offered an alternative to the Taff Vale Railway and, due to greater efficiency, was possibly the most lucrative of the South Wales railways. It ran passenger services but the mainstay of the Company was always the movement of coal.
