Coronation Class No 6222 Queen Mary. Designed by Sir William Stanier and introduced in 1937, these locmotives were part of a class of 26. The first four were in the blue livery as shown while others were in LMS red with gold stripes (see No 6228 Duchess of Rutland). Not all were streamlined. Introduced in the middle of the Art Deco age when publicity departments raved about modernity, style and speed, nonetheless these locomotives were fast, reliable and prodigious haulers. One of the Class, No 6220 Coronation, held the world speed record, fairly briefly, at 114 mph.
