Introduced in 1926 by George Hughes these locomotives were very useful to the LMS at a time when they were relying on ex Midland engines for their express services; often a task they could not manage due to the increased loads and very often had to be double headed. The fully exposed motion earned them the nickname of "Crabs" but notwithstanding this they were very good locomotives.
